However, I've run through the various similar questions in Tek-tips and gotten to the point where I can now see the desktop in the Vista network. I can also connect via remote desktop to the desktop machine from the Vista machine, and I can ping the desktop successfully. However, when i try to explore the hard drive on the desktop machine from the vista laptop, I get back a message that windows cannot access the desktop.
In the past I've connected successfully with a different Vista laptop. Thanks to anyone who can help me with next steps to resolve the issue. What are you running for an anti-virus solution and does it have a firewall? Are you sharing the drive correctly? Do you get any access if you try "Safe Mode with Networking" on both machines? Will Vista allow you to "Map" and use the drive that way?
Look at your security programs on both machines. Thanks, tlcscousin and linney. I've tried all the suggestions from linney, and there's no change. Windows firewall is running on both. I've read through linney's links, and I tried the network problem solver. I do notice two things of possible relevance. IPconfig on the vista machine shows the "connection specific DNS suffix" as the work group name.
